School Business Managers in 80% of UK secondary schools

In Uncategorized on 2 November 2009 at 10:13 pm

Having been a primary school governor for the past 6 years I have a good working knowledge of how the business side of  primary schools function.  The article on page 13 in SecED this week caught my eye  as it shows how School Business Managers have become integral to the success of secondary schools.

I was impressed at how well  the partnership between Heather Mullany, Headteacher and Stephen Dewhurst,  School Business Manager (SBM), at The Heath Specialist Technology College in Runcorn is working. The SBM is delegated substantial administrative, financial and managerial responsibilities leaving the Headteacher to focus on improving and maintaining excellent teaching and learning.

Heather Mullany reports that she has achieved a healthy work/life balance and Stephen Dewhurst, a former teacher and manager at The Heath, is obviously providing the school huge benefits in his able to focus on the processes essential to the success of  The Heath as a business.

I know of head teachers and senior managers whose work/life balance goes ‘sour’ towards the end of their careers and it is really refreshing to see such a widespread positive step has been made to redress the balance.
